Sadly, recently and terribly unexpectedly, we lost another ‘celebrity’. Although I’m not entirely sure he would’ve been comfortable being referred to as such, Tom Petty was certainly a man who influenced a multitude of musicians and music lovers the world over.

As days go by and the reality sinks in I’ve begun to recall, what are to me anyway, his most memorable songs and lyrics.

Of course we’ll all agree ‘you don’t have to live like a refugee’ and that ‘even the losers get lucky sometimes’, but here are a few more I feel like sharing;

‘No, I’ll stand my ground, won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
and I won’t back down’

‘You can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won’t back down’

‘There’s something good waiting down this road
I’m picking up whatever’s mine’

‘Yeah runnin’ down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin’ on a mystery, goin’ wherever it leads
Runnin’ down a dream’

‘The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card’

‘The waiting is the hardest part
Everyday you get one more yard’

‘You take it on faith, you take to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part’

‘Well the good ol’ days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn’

‘I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing

‘Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I’ve started out for God knows where
I guess I’ll know when I get there’

‘I’m learning to fly, around the clouds
But what goes up must come down’

‘I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing’

I’m sure there’s a hundred more we could include here. These are the ones I remember the most. You probably have a few too. Tom’s songcraft was a lot like comfort food. Like a warm bowl of your favorite soup on a cold night. It was easy to take it for granted that it would always be around, making it easier still to be blindsided by the fact that there won’t be any more added in the years to come.

Goodby Mr Petty. You will be sorely missed.
